A couple of years back, I did a series of blog posts where authors confessed something about their books. An interesting fact or some kind of secret that no one knew. I’m going to pick that up again and start with myself. My reveal is about Circle in the Sand, and after you read it, you can enter for a chance at winning a paperback copy.
Many of you know there are pieces of me in every character I create. Even the men. In Circle in the Sand, Jax had a nickname growing up: Wonder Woman. That’s me. Not because I’m a super hero who runs around in a skimpy American flag costume. Jax and I just wonder about things. All the time. I’ve been this way my whole life. I’m the type of person who gets out her phone after a movie to see “whatever happened to that actor.” Or I hear a song and have to know what the singer meant when they wrote the lyrics. Google is my best buddy and unfortunately my self-diagnosis partner.
I ask my husband dumb questions during sports like, “What’s that thing on the ref’s wrist?” or “What are all those stickers for on their helmets?” Did that announcer used to play sports, too?”
My mother said, when I was five she got my ears pierced. I didn’t cry or even notice it had been done because I was preoccupied asking the ladies so many questions about the ear piercing process.
Sometimes, my wondering helps me come up with stories. I see people and I ponder what their story might be. I make up little scenarios for them or for why they are wherever they are when I see them.
Wondering keeps me awake at night sometimes though. I’ve even wondered about the very moment you switch from being awake to being asleep and when I catch myself thinking about that I bolt awake. It can be maddening. Wanting to have all the answers all the time is not always fun. But it does keep my creative juices flowing and make for some unique characters and storylines.
With Jax, I took that wondering to another level. She acted on her inquisitiveness. If she wondered what something would be like, then she went ahead and did it, including walking right up to a guy and kissing him.
